THE goose is no longer loose!

A goose that had been causing havoc in a Hampshire town has now been captured, following a two day operation by animal welfare experts.

The bird, named Davina by residents, had been spending its days on a roundabout in the middle of Bishops Waltham.

However, civic chiefs were worried that she may be killed or cause an accident on the busy roundabout. Meon Valley MP George Hollingbery also got involved.

Denmead Poultry owner Andrew Rafferty was called in but failed to capture her on Wednesday as “she was too smart for us.”

At 10.50am this morning, the self-named Goose Squad took to the water of South Pond – next to the roundabout - in a second attempt to capture Davina.

However, she managed to evade her captors again in scenes similar to those seen in the comedy hit Hot Fuzz (below), and waddled into traffic and onto the roundabout.

Daily Echo: Today's scenes were reminiscent of comedy caper Hot Fuzz, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Following many attempts to grab the bird, she was finally caught at 11.20.

“It took a lot less time than I thought it would,” said Mr Rafferty. “I am just glad that she is okay.

“Some people were concerned what we were going to do with her, but I can assure them that she will be well looked after. She will live with my four pet geese on my farm!”

Locals had grown to love the bird after she and her companion, David, were dumped in the area two years ago.

However, David was killed in a suspected dog attack last September and residents said Davina started to act differently.

Andy Adamson, of Hoe Road, Bishops Waltham, said he was sad to see the bird go.

“We have grown to love her in the town,” added Mr Adamson. “But I am glad she is going somewhere safer.

Daily Echo: The Goose Squad in action today.

“The last thing we wanted was to see her get run over, that would have been awful.”

As previously reported, the heartbroken bird had been attacking cars and causing tailbacks in the town.

Commuters regularly found her stood on the B3035 and B2177 roundabout, refusing to move and angrily pecking at car tyres.

The much-loved bird also had a twitter account set up in her honour. The BW Goose has been tweeting her movements and said goodbye to followers when she was caught earlier today.

Nevertheless, the bird did share a joke or two, tweeting: “Anyone using a 'wild goose chase' joke in reference to catching me... I'm disappointed in you. Try harder, I deserve better than that.”
