BOAT owners are being urged to remain vigilant following a series of marine thefts.

Fareham MP Suella Fernandes has spoken out against the growing problem in the Solent area following a briefing from Chief Inspector Sharon Wolrich, about the wave of thefts from vessels in Fareham, Swanwick, Porchester, Haslar Marina and Hardway.

Between July 25 and October 31 39 thefts were reported with all but five of those in a period between September 2 and October 20.

Smaller boats have been stolen to access larger vessels moored off-shore and electrical equipment including radios and GPS systems have been stolen along with clothing, sunglasses, and cash.

Following her police briefing, Mrs Fernandes said: “I saw first-hand how thieves have targeted boats docked in marinas across the local area.

"Marine theft can cost victims a significant amount when expensive electrical equipment is stolen.

"But it is also having a huge cost on local police who are working to deter thieves by launching more patrols, and are investigating thefts that have been committed.

"I urge boat owners to be vigilant, to secure property on their boats, and to report suspicious behaviour. What is really important now is that we raise awareness of the issue."

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department have now taken on the investigation to identify the thieves, but have so far made no arrests, although Hampshire Constabulary have reported that possible suspects are being looked at.

In response to growing concern from boat owners, Hampshire Police Marine Unit have been conducting patrols and Neighbourhood Police Team have increased their presence in the worst-hit areas.

Chief Inspector Wolrich said: “We take marine theft very seriously and I’d urge boat owners to report any suspicious activity to us at the time to enable us to respond appropriately.

“I’m pleased to say that so far in November no incidents of marine theft in the area have been reported to us, but I’d like to remind people to keep their vessels and equipment as secure as possible."
