A COMMUNITY group is looking to extend a 20mph zone due to fears over speeding.

Titchfield Village Trust is campaigning to extend the current 20mph limit in the village centre to all roads leading in.

The trust has submitted a proposal to Hampshire County Council, which is expected to make a decision within the next few weeks.

Cllr Geoff Hockley, county councillor for Titchfield, said: “I wanted to protect residents from those who drive through Titchfield at wholly inappropriate speeds for this ancient set of roads.

“Pleased as I was that we achieved our 20mph limit I, and much of the village, were baffled as to why the scheme did not encompass all of the roads.”

Under the trust’s plans, the 20mph limit would be extended from West Street to St Margaret’s Lane and Common Lane in the west and from High Street to Bridge Street and Titchfield Hill in the east.

Nick Girdler, trust chairman, said: “The limit would also encompass Coach Hill, a very busy road at peak times when all the children from the Bellfield Estate are crossing it in order to get to the primary school.

“The extended scheme would make life safer, not only for pedestrians, but for drivers as well. Titchfield is a conservation area and the roads were not built for speed - they were built for horses.”
