THE centenary of a Hampshire airfield has been cleared for take off tomorrow.

Thousands of people will gather at HMS Daedalus today to celebrate 100 years since it began operation in 1917.

Among the celebrations, visitors will be able to enjoy a static aircraft display showcasing some of Daedalus’ old favourites in partnership with local flying associations including both vintage and modern commercial aircraft.

There will also be stalls and side shows, a selection of catering outlets, a fun fair, bouncy castle and various other children’s activities.

Cllr Sean Woodward, the leader of Fareham Borough Council, said: “As custodians of the airfield, we want to be part of the heritage of this historic site that had an important role in the world wars.

“The celebrations at Daedalus is important because it helps to develop our long-term vision to attract more businesses and clients.”

Councillor Trevor Cartwright, chairman of the Daedalus Anniversary Group, added: “This is a fantastic opportunity to visit Daedalus and learn about its heritage whilst having fun with all of the family.”

Daedalus Airfield opened during the First World War on July 30, 1917, as the naval seaplane training school consisting of a slipway and various hangar facilities and was purchased by Fareham Borough Council in 2015 who plan to invest £50m in the site.

The event will run today between 10am and 4pm.
