Road to be closed after landslide

A COASTAL road in Hampshire will be closed for six months after part of a cliff collapsed.

Homes were left without gas and electricity while one resident had to be evacuated following the landslide on Hill Head Road in Hill Head.

The ground sunk by three feet from street level, pulling away the footpath and cracking the surface of the road near the Osborne View Pub.

Highway bosses say the wider issue of the landslide will have to be dealt with before road repairs can begin. It is likely to involve major works to stabilise the area – and that could mean the route being closed off for at least six months.

Ken Thornber, leader of Hampshire County Council, said it was unclear what caused the landslide, on January 17, but that the cold weather may have been a factor.

“It is anticipated a heavy engineering solution will be necessary, which could take many months to construct,” he said.

there might be more to this, it also could be what i was saying will happen if they dredge to deep in the approach channels to southampton docks, the valley sides slipping down to fill up the dredge channel,
top layer's of the sea bed being washed away to fill in the dredge channel, so there is less support to keep up the cliff sides, then with all this wet and cold weather has compound the problem.

Mr and Mrs Spark were in the Osborne View the night the cliff gave way, fortunately I had finished my Guinness before the safety brigade kicked the customers out of the Osborne View (you can see Osborne House on the IoW on a clear day from here). It happened as the roads were thawing out at the end of last weeks big freeze, coupled with the heavy traffic that uses this road to avoid the Stubbington bottle neck, that might have been a factor in the collapse. The ‘heads’ are in the corner of this fine establishment, that corner of the pub is in mortal danger of collapse when flushing, could be embarrassing for someone!

Southy, you make me laugh this cliff is 50 yards from the beach, no dredging has taken place on Cliff Road, only off the coast where the oyster bed fishermen have killed off the sea life during the last 30 years.

As a foot note, when Gary Glitter returned to the UK he stayed in a house 100 yards from this incident, but he’s not there anymore!

Brite Spark, the dredging dont have to be close. if the top layers of the sea bed are being washed away to fill in the dredge channel, this will change the angle of the beach, whitch in turn will put the cliff under pressure. it just nature way of rebalancing the problem.
and with this wet and cold it will not help, plus what you said the traffic.
