Thousands watch horse fair at Wickham

Traders at the horse fair at Wickham. Traders at the horse fair at Wickham.

THOUSANDS lined the streets as the equine community cantered into Wickham for the biggest and oldest horse fair in the country.

Crowds flocked to the usually quiet village to soak up the atmosphere at the traditional event, which dates back some 800 years.

Horse lovers gather annually to swap secrets, meet with friends and parade their cherished animals in one of just two major horse-trading events in the country.

Police officers were on hand to ensure the fair passed off smoothly while roads through the village were closed off for most of the day.

Last night a police spokesman said there had been no repeat performance of the bare knuckle fighting marring 2009’s celebrations.

Can't possibly be bigger or older than Appleby. You only have to look at the tapes and DVD's of Appleby fairs over the years to see it is much bigger than Wickham.

Remember that journalists working for our local rag are not good enough to get jobs with The Sun, so that, in my opinion, gives you the measure of their potential ! Or, the "writer" may have deliberately inserted this incorrect information to provoke a reaction from the regular posters here. Horse fairs are linked with the travelling community, and there are many in Southampton with extreme opposing views. Yes, it does have the distinct smell of "stirring".

For the benefit of Stillness, Lone Ranger and the other trolls, I have said all I have to say on this, and will not be drawn into any discussion with you.

Oops ! Just checked, and found that Wickham is much older : first set up c.1280, whereas Appleby not till.....1685, I think.
However, not sure that it is bigger.

Still think that Echo journalists write poor-quality pieces, generally ! Just my opinion.

Obviously the Echo's poor quality pieces nowhere near as bad as your poor responses then.
.
Check your facts BEFORE you shout your mouth off.

In 1269 King Henry III granted a charter to Roger de Scures for fairs and markets to be held on a Thursday in Wickham Square. This did not include the horse fair as it came much later.

Remember saying that, Stillness ? Wickham fair will give you the opportunity you wanted.

I have stated that I will not "discuss" anything with Stillness and the other trolls.

But it will not go unnoticed by other regular posters that stillness continues with sick, cynical comments that evade the issue.

What the spokesman should have said is we never saw any, no doubt it happened, just not out in the open, its traditional!
