A HAMPSHIRE coastguard team has warned against people jumping into coastal water.

Hill Head Rescue Coastguard team tweeted safety advice on twitter yesterday after it was reported to them that someone had jumped into Fareham Creek to help a dog.

The tweet said: "Second time this week we have learned of a member of the public jumping into the water, this time in Fareham Creek, to help a dog.

"Although this may seem heroic, it’s very dangerous.

"Cold water shock takes seconds to effect."

"Call 999 HM Coastguard, we are trained and equipped for this."
