Will I be allowed to help if my first three suggestions are:- 1 - stop smoking, 2 - stop drinking and 3 - cancel the Sky subscription?

I can only assume you are thinking because this project is being run in Thornhill they must be all smoke, drink and have a Sky TV subscription.

What next get a job and give up the drugs?

People get into debt for lots of different reasons, can I suggest you grow up a little.

This project does a sterling job in helping lots of people, not only in Thornhill but other area's in Southampton and South East Hampshire.

do you actually know Thornhill? People there are at the mercy of poor credit- interest free deals that go sour, loans at massive interest rates, buying stuff on the tick etc. Don't be naive to think that a Credit Union will solve all ills, people on that estate need to get back to work so they can afford the TV without paying Bright House 33% apr.

"What next get a job and give up the drugs?" - those are points 3 and 5 since you have asked. Once these "easy wins" are sorted then we can look at the real help - the kind that matters. Until points 1, 2, 3 and 5 are sorted there is little point throwing good money and time after bad. You need to wake up and perhaps grow up.

I've probably forgotton more about Thornhill than you know or will ever know Condor Man.

As for me being naive, I think not, I think if naivety is being shown it is being shown by you.

Are you aware that there are 10.5 thousand people living in 4.5 thousand homes in Thornhill, 53% of those homes are in private ownership, I suppose those people who own their own homes are jobless, I think not.

This credit union will not fix everyone's problems, but by joining a credit union it takes away business of the doorstep lenders, such as Provident, who charge interest of 183% on loans that thrive in places like Thornhill, praying on some people who are unable to obtain credit elsewhere, sometimes this is due to unforeseen and or unfortunate circumstances.

The work this credit union does is amazing, giving credit to people will often not get it, couple that with debt advice so people do not slip back into debt and you have a recipe for success.

People like you Condor Man make sick, by making uninformed observations about people you know nothing about just because they live in certain area, some by choice and not by choice.

I'm am so glad you can afford to go out and buy what you like without credit, you've have probably worked hard all your life to be in that position, but are many people living in this city who are not in that position, please don't knock those in that position just because of where they live.

Naive me? I don't think so.

I actually feel sorry for you, you clearly are ignorant.

You clearly don't understand what credit unions are about.

You think that everyone in Thornhill is not working and sit at home all day watching Sky TV whilst drinking beer and smoking fags or drugs.

How do you think people in Thornhill buy their homes?

One wonders what village you come from, I know has every village has one, but give it computer plus internet access and the world can find out what your village knows already, your it.

most people bought houses in Thornhill about 25 years ago for massive discounts, hence why nearly all the houses are sold- the same applies in places like Lordshill, Harefield and Townhill. The problem is that although many houses are sold a lot were privately let so there are still a lot of people living on low incomes in these areas. Because the cost of living is so high they are trapped in a cycle of debt.

I note that you have failed to answer my question and continue to suggest that lending people in debt more money (using a credit union) is somehow an answer. Come on answer my question - what are your suggestions to clients in debt?

I agree loads of property was bought at that time and before that, my father bought the family with his redundancy package from the docks.

People/families living on low to middle income struggle, especially at times like Christmas, that is when the doorstep lender is so very prominent in Thornhill, companies like Shoppacheque, Provident and Bright House are always on the look for another poor unsuspecting person to get their claws into, this credit union project offers an alternative to that solutions.

It operate a saving scheme for primary school children as well and collects the money inside school.

No this credit union will not the ill's of the world, but you have to start somewhere, it has nearly 200 investors they have turned their backs on the like of Provident.

If this credit union continues in Thornhill, educating parents as well as children then, hopefully over time the cycle of debt will be broken.

The people I have spoken to regarding the credit union and the debt advice service have said it helped them out of debt, and taught them how to manage their money better, the doorstep lending companies are losing out the credit union, that why they need more volunteers.

The answer to your question is this.

If you knew anything about credit unions, you would know that you have to save 1st before you can borrow, by assisting in managing people's debt by giving them advice on to debt management and getting them to save at the same time, you are educating people in money management.

For instance.

If you are a disabled pensioner, without a bank account, living on state pension and manage to get into debt you are trapped, this project could assist you out of that debt and offer a savings options, once you have saved a certain amount you borrow an amount repayable at an affordable low interest rate to fit your means, thus preventing you incurring more debt from the doorstep lender or loan shark.

Your best suggestion is,

The pensioner switches off her she Sky TV puts down her cigarette/ joint and can of beer, gets herself down to the job centre to get a full-time job, so she get herself out of debt.

I think that makes you exactly what I said you are.

Your it.
