8:30am Saturday 26th March 2011 in Local Focus - Thornhill
By Matt Smith, Politics and business reporter
RESIDENTS on a Southampton estate will this weekend get to have a say on how they want to see £75,000 spent on their community.
NHS Southampton City has put up the cash to improve the health and wellbeing of residents in Thornhill.
For the fourth year running residents will get to vote on ideas that they think will most benefit them.
Not-for-profit organisations and community groups were earlier this year invited to submit ideas for suitable projects, including dance classes, football groups and a service that offers debt and benefit advice.
Seventeen applicants will pitch for cash at an open event at Thornhill Baptist Church tomorrow held by Southampton City Council, known as Your Health, Your Community, Your Vote.
NHS Southampton City public health director Dr Andrew Mortimore said: “This ongoing investment and improvement programme has made a real positive impact in recent years and this latest funding will provide people with another fantastic opportunity to get involved and help to benefit the local community.”
Councillor Ivan White, Cabinet member for adult social care, said: “This event is a great way of bringing the community together so that they can have their say about what they want for Thornhill – it will also be fun.”
Since it began in 2008, around 200 Thornhill residents have helped choose how they want health funding spent locally.
NHS Southampton City has allocated more than £200,000 to 49 initiatives under the Thornhill Plus You scheme.
There will be free refreshments and a prize draw for residents attending. Transport is available but must be booked. For details or to book transport call Sharon Price on 023 8091 5208.

Anyone attending, will enjoy this event.
It's gives the community the opportunity to get really involved in the decision making process.
Those who do intend to go, please vote for the Motiv8 youth projects, the children and young people of Thornhill have been let down by the council withdrawing all youth workers on the the estate, Motiv8 will give them the chance to have some fun whilst getting fit and healthy, if you live in Thornhill and want to support Motiv8 just turn up, register and vote.

As I said in the Echo at the time, they would be moanng when the area got even worse for anti-social behaviour!

Yes most groups struggle for volunteers, not just in Thornhill but all over the city/country and the Tory answer to groups struggling for volunteers is the Big Society, cutting services, sacking people (or in their words deleting posts) so as to put more pressure on volunteers, who will further struggle because this Government will not even help them out by handing over money to train the volunteer to fill the gaps left by professionals.
Thornhill has one of the most active communities in the country, it still has it's problems (like everywhere else) but people have spent years volunteering to make it a better place to live and work, come out from under your rock and take a look Condor Man you might be surprised and see a vibrant community.
Oh yes, as for people not wanting to take part,,, you should have strolled upto the baptist church yesterday afternoon and seen the 150 people taking part in this successful event, including volunteer organisers.
The local authority (your friend Royston and his chums) have let the children and young people of this city down, ( agreed some parents are to blame as well) however by sacking nearly every youth worker (outside of central Southampton) the blame lays totally at the door of the council, not the volunteer trying to replace the professionals sack by them.
Thanks to everyone who voted for Motiv8, the volunteers and workers will enjoy delivering this project for the children and young people for the next year, it shows the people of Thornhill really believe that every child does matter.

It's not stopping young men shirking their responsibilities of looking after the children they sire. It's not giving young people the encouragement to do well at school and find reasonably paid work at the end of it. It's not stopping the elderly living in fear of young people who run amok is it!

If every child matters they would be better looked after by their families, not expecting the state to step in all the time. A vibrant community is one where everyone puts in their time and money for the benefit of their neighbours. It's about looking out for each other and making sure no one gets left behind. This is not a job for council workers, it a role everyone living in an area must take up. You'll know that Thornhill Baptist Church pay for a youth worker from their own funds and theydo a lot of good work in Harefield- an area that didn't have £50m spent on it.

The new retail park has been a failure with only a KFC and The Range on the roster. What happened to the supermarket or gym? So much public money has been spent but where is the prosperity that should surely follow? it's pointless empowering people if they are still in the same socio-economic position as they were in the first place.

As for your comment, the large number under age girls becoming, I would like to know where you get your evidence for this comment? or are just running down an area for no reason other than your failure to know the facts.
Here is another fact for you Condor Man, the crime rate has dropped in Thornhill steadily over the last 3 years, however it has increased in Bitterne S4 beat, which covers Harefield, Bitterne and Thornhill, therefore if crime has decreased in Thornhill it has increased in the other 2 areas, your comment again is factually untrue, if you don't believe me go ask your local beat sergeant.
People's fear of crime has also reduced in Thornhill but has increased in the other 2 areas, go ask the elderly people in Thornhill if they feel safer now than ever before, in fact go and read SCC crime and fear of crime survey report, it will show you Thornhill is leading the way in the city as one of the safest places to live.
No one is expecting the state to look after their children, if they did they would be in for a shock, the state can't even meet it's obligation to after it's elderly, but the volunteers believe they do, unlike this government, who
are clueless and are failing young and elderly alike.
A vibrant community is one, that is empowered to engage with decision makers, or in fact makes decisions for themselves, to make where they live a better place to live and work and for the benefit of all of the community, Thornhill volunteers do that every single day, you just don't see it or are you know nothing.
If you truly believe that Harefield is utopia without any problems whatsoever, you really to remove your rose coloured glasses.
Finally the baptist church has recruited a youth minister, however he is not in post yet, when he starts in the middle of April he will being doing 60% of his work in the community, yes Thornhill as well Harefield, you should question why the church felt it needed it's youth minister to work in the community?
I will let you know you, it's simlpy because the council failed in it's obligation to provide youth workers in this city, like it's failing the elderly and everyone else living in this city.
If you wish to continue to slag off an area, your more than welcome to do so, but please use facts to back up your claims not fiction.
