Police officers investigating the robbery and kidnap are meeting this afternoon to review the latest developments and might issue a further statement later today.

11:43am

Lymington has been described as a “safe and caring community” by district councillor Elizabeth Lewis.

She described the Rookes Lane robbery as a “most abnormal circumstance”.

"People should be careful but not anxious. This is one of the safest places to be.

“I’ve been here for 13 years and can’t recall anything like it happening before.

“People were talking about it when I went shopping this morning. Someone suggested that the culprit might have been short of money but that’s no reason for doing what he did.”

Rookes Lane resident Peter Young also welcomed news of the arrests.

“No-one has so far been charged with any offence but hopefully we’re a bit nearer the point at which this matter can be cleared up,” he said.

Referring to the events of last Friday he added: “We were aware that something was going on because one of the houses was cordoned off.  This might seem like a sleepy little place but danger can linger anywhere. It’s certainly been something of a jolt.

“I’m not aware of any police activity at the scene today.”

10:25am

The mayor of Lymington, Councillor Jacqui England, was delighted to learn of the two arrests.

“I’m very pleased that the investigation appears to be making progress, “ she said.

“Hopefully people in the town will feel safer as a result of the latest developments. I’ve been told about one household where the occupants are double locking the doors.”

Referring to two robberies at Rookes Lane and Brockenhurst station she added: “Nothing like this has ever happened around here before. It just illustrates the shocking times in which we live.”
