Pensioner 'lucky to be alive' after hitting robber with poker
AN elderly man who struck a robber in the face with a fire poker said he is lucky not to have been killed.
Frederick Turner, who will be 83 in December, was sitting in front of the television at 1pm on Tuesday when two men in their 30s broke into his home of 50 years.
However, the farmer managed to hit one of the thugs with the iron poker, and they left with just £100 and the foot-long object, as the Daily Echo reported yesterday.
Mr Turner, who lives alone, said: “I was sitting in my chair when one of them grabbed me from behind. He held me still around my shoulders while they demanded money. They pulled out the drawers of a cabinet looking for cash and ripped the phone out of the wall.”
After the robbers searched through the drawers, they turned their attention to Mr Turner’s armchair, pushing him on to the floor to pull apart the cushions in their hunt for cash.
“I saw the poker next to me and I hit him around the face with it,” he said.
“I thought that was it for me after I did that – but all they did was grab the poker from me and start clearing up all the blood on the floor so the police wouldn’t be able to collect it later.”
Mr Turner, who lives near Fordingbridge, was left with a deep cut in his hand as the poker was dragged away from his grasp. He also suffered some bruising, but was otherwise unharmed.
He said: “I was lucky that it wasn’t worse. After I hit him, I was waiting to see how he’d react. They were a couple of strong lads, but they just wanted to get the blood cleared away. I thought they would turn on me and that could have been that.”
Following the attack, Mr Turner followed the men out of the house before standing at the side of the road to catch the attention of a passer-by.
However, he later returned to his home, and said that he has no fears about being in the property alone. “It’s my house and I’m certainly not worried about being here,” he said.
