RUNNERS across the south are celebrating plans to rescue one of Hampshire’s biggest sporting events.

The New Forest Marathon, which has raised more than £1.25m for charity since it was first held in 1982, is to set to make a welcome return on September 13.

Last year’s race was cancelled, with organisers blaming a huge rise in costs and a sharp drop in entries caused by rival races.

But Andy Daish and Chris Farr of Ora Events have vowed to re-launch the marathon and accompanying half marathon. They are also planning to devise a new route and introduce two extra events, a 5k race and a 10k option.

Andy, 35, said: “We are really excited and honoured to have this opportunity to produce a product that can really benefit the area.

“So far the response has been phenomenal – we are getting between 60 and 100 people registering an interest on our website every day.”

The marathon used to be organised by a small band of volunteers, with profits donated to local charities. The new-look event will be run as a commercial venture but good causes still stand to benefit.

It adds: “Your commitment to the event has helped us generate £1.25m for local good causes. We are excited to see this pot continue to grow to support the many great organisations and individuals that exist in the New Forest and surrounding areas.”

Details of the new route are still being finalised but it is likely to involve the New Forest National Park.
