DOZENS of spectactors lined Beaulieu High Street yesterday to see pupils from the village school take part in belated pancake races.

The event is usually held on Shrove Tuesday, but the school was on its half-term.

Despite villagers being asked not to leave cars in the area, organisers were faced with a handful obstructing the course – but in the end just one car was left for children to negotiate as they sprinted towards the finishing line opposite the school entrance.

Lord Montagu’s son and heir, the Hon Ralph Montagu, was among the spectators.

Compere Frederick Norris, chairman of Beaulieu Parish Council, said: “We’re only one week late doing this – but we’re on Beaulieu Central Time!”
