A MAN has been rushed to hospital after a four-vehicle crash on a busy Hampshire road.

The crash on the westbound carriageway of the A31 at Bratley Arch involved a Ford Transit, a Toyota Carolla, a Vauxhall Astra, and a Vauxhal Insignia.

Both the westbound and eastbound carriageways were closed while the air ambulance landed but they were reopened at 6.30pm.

Motorists are still facing long tailbacks on the westbound carriageway but the eastbound carriageway is now flowing freely.

The road was closed as Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulances landed on the road.

At least one person was cut free from a vehicle and traffic tailed back as far as the M27.

A man in his 20s, is in a serious but not life-threatening condition after the crash at 4.15pm.

The accident occurred around three miles west of Stoney Cross.

Emergency services rushed to the scene, including five police cars and four fire crews from Totton, Burley, Romsey and Redbridge.

South Central Ambulance Service sent one ambulance crew, an emergency care practitioner, an ambulance officer and a hazardous area response team.

Motorists faced tail backs of around 30 minutes after the road was closed between Station Road and the A325 West Street at about 5pm to allow the air ambulance to land.

Police are now investigating the cause of the crash.

Anyone with information can call Hampshire Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

• Police originally said a motorcyclist was involved in the incident, but later clarified this was not the case, as the incident involving a motorcyclist was in another part of the county and had been confused with the A31 crash.
