A CAR left the road and ploughed into a building in a Hampshire village.

The vehicle careered into the property in Broadley Close, Holbury, at 8.40pm last night.

Crews from Hardley and Beaulieu arrived but the motorist was out of the vehicle by the time they arrived.

The burgundy Kia people carrier was reversing out of a driveway when it smashed into the side of a silver Renault Megane parked on a driveway and careered into the next door house.

The impact caused part of the building's side to cave in, leaving a gaping hole and brickwork hanging precariously over the edge.

Keith Morris, 75, was inside watching television when the car smashed into his property.

Daily Echo:

He said: "I heard this big bang and initially thought it was something on the television.

"I came out and the car was there and dust was all over the place.

"We've now got no electric or gas and we can't do anything until a structural engineer comes to look at it.

"They've got to stabilise it until they can remove the car so they can stabilise the roof."

He said his wife Jean, who was up in the bedroom at the time of the crash, is "devastated and upset" at what has happened.

Driver Rick Sabine, 76,  was shaken but unharmed in the crash.

He told the Echo he was reversing off the drive in his automatic car when he realised something was wrong.

He said: "All of a sudden the acceleration went berserk and I span around, hit the car and span again into the wall.

"I was trying to break like mad and it wasn't happening.

"I hit the wall and I came to a stop with a great big thud."

A neighbour helped him out of the vehicle before emergency services arrived.

He added: "I was more concerned about Jean because I could hear her screaming."

Ambulance crews were also called to the scene but the driver was not injured.

Police were also called to the scene.
