A DAZZLING display of military horsemanship will be the star attraction at this year’s New Forest and Hampshire County Show.

The Daily Echo can exclusively reveal that the Household Cavalry will stage its world-famous musical ride at the three-day spectacular, which takes place at Brockenhurst in July.

Jubilant show bosses say it will be one of the best displays in the event’s 95-year history.

“We are delighted to announce that the incredible musical ride will be the main ring attraction this year,” said a show spokesman.

“The show is always looking to improve the visitor experience and, following requests from the public, is thrilled that the Household Cavalry is able to attend.

“Their display is truly breathtaking.”

Mounted on black horses and dressed in colourful red and blue ceremonial uniforms, the troop will stage two performances on all three days of the Daily Echo-backed show.

“It’s a dynamic display that will wow the crowds,” said the spokesman.

Show secretary Denis Dooley added: “I am absolutely delighted that the Household Cavalry have agreed to attend.

“It’s truly one of the best attractions we have had in our 95 years and makes this show one not to be missed.”

First performed at the Royal Tournament in 1882, the musical ride features a series of cavalry drill movements set to music.

As part of the display some of the horses lie down and remain on the ground – a reminder of the days when horses went into battle and were trained to lie down so their riders could hide behind them and fire at the enemy.

Soldiers chosen to take part in the musical ride undergo three months of training before beginning an exhausting round of public performances in May.
