AN OVERTURNED lorry brought hours of traffic chaos to a major Hampshire road.

The lorry fell on it's side crushing a lamp post and scraping a car as it landed on the A326 Marchwood-By-Pass.

It had been carrying a load of rubbish which tipped out across the entrance to Jacob's Gutter Lane and residents watched as police and refuse workers attempted to clear the scene, with traffic tailing back onto the A35 Totton-By-Pass yesterday afternoon.

Karen Cass, 50 from Hounsdown estate, said: "It's a miracle that no one was seriously hurt, if there had been someone walking on the path nearby it could be a completely different situation.

"The scene is quite shocking but this road is very dangerous, there have been more and more accidents here by Rushington roundabout and I think lorries go way too fast."

Jackie Wilbourn, 32 from Hounsdown estate added: "With is being a load of rubbish the smell isn't very nice but ultimately I hope the driver is alright."

A woman who lives on Jacob's Gutter Lane said: "I don't know where it was going but it must have gone way too fast around that corner.

"It really worries me because there seem to be lots of lorry accidents here and with it being so close to school time when it happened I just dread to think what could have happened if a Hounsdown pupil was walking on the lane nearby by and that lamp post fell."

Another witness told the Daily Echo that they believed the driver of the lorry had been taken to hospital and a spokesperson for South Central Ambulance said: "We sent an ambulance crew and an officer to the scene who assessed two patients and one patient, a male believed to be in his 60's has been taken to Southampton General Hospital."

A spokesman for Hampshire police added that no one was in a serious condition and they were working with a removal crane to get rid of the rubbish in another lorry before lifting the vehicle back on its side to clear the road.
