DAYS after Lewis Hamilton secured a British Formula One victory a Hampshire town staged its own Grand Prix.

The centre of New Milton became a race track as almost 50 teams battled it out in the biennial pedal car race.

And just like Formula One there were some competitors from Germany too, as a team travelled hundreds of miles from the country to take part.

Despite their efforts the team from Horn Cutting Technology - which has an outlet in Ringwood - missed out on a podium finish as they finished fourth.

A crowd of between 2,500 and 3,000 people watched as the team from New Forest Health and Leisure Centre claimed first place, followed by Christchurch Bicycle Club and Squeals on Wheels.

Youngsters from Ballard School won the junior trophy.

Race organiser Conrad Curtis said: "The racing was brilliant, particularly between Squeals on Wheels and the visitors from Germany, they were swapping places all of the way through the race and up to the lane when the girls just beat them."

The pedal car race, which saw vehicles hit speeds of up to 34mph, will take place in Ringwood next year before returning to New Milton in 2017.
