A MAN is fighting for his life in hospital after being crushed under a steel beam after an accident at a Hampshire industrial site.

The air ambulance was called to Hythe Marine Park on the western shores of Southampton Water following the incident at around 11.30am.

A man in his 50s was flown to Southampton General Hospital with serious injuries to his chest and legs which are described as life-threatening by South Central Ambulance Service.

The casualty was wheeled out on a stretcher and placed aboard the air ambulance, which took off just before 1pm.

Witnesses said the aircraft had been at Hythe Marine Park for between 40 minutes and an hour.

They also reported seeing a police car.

Staff at the complex declined to comment on the incident.

SCAS also send a land ambulance, rapid response vehicle and an ambulance officer.

Other members of the emergency services have also been called to the site in Shore Road, Hythe.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said one of its co-responders was at the scene.
