This is the dramatic moment a man in his early 60s was rescued from a well he had fallen down.

The 61-year-old fell into the 30 ft well in Linford Green, in Linford Road, Linford, and landed in water below.

But, trapped at the bottom, the injured man found himself in deep water - and he could not swim.

With the emergency services alerted, firefighters from Hampshire and Dorset fire and rescue services arrived including crews from Ringwood, Ferndown and Redbridge in Southampton and immediately lowered a life jacket to keep him afloat and avoid a risk of drowning.

Daily Echo: This picture shows just how deep the man fell.

The large well was situated inside a barn and measured 2.5m in diameter.

Firefighters then set up a rope rescue and lowered a firefighter down the well with assistance from a Hampshire Urban Search and Rescue Specialist. The male casualty was assisted into a harness and lifted to safety.

Daily Echo:

Officer in Charge of the incident Station Manager Greg Garrett said: "This was an unusual incident where the quick and effective partnership working between firefighters and the ambulance service aided the successful rescue of the man.

"We are extremely pleased that, after falling such a long way down the well, the man has now been released from hospital and is recovering well at home."

The incident came to a close at approximately 7pm on Tuesday and the male casualty was taken to hospital by the South Central Ambulance Service.
