TWO people were cut free from vehicles on a major road after a two car crash.

One lane on the A31 eastbound was closed at Ringwood following the accident involving a car and a pick-up truck shortly after 4.30pm yesterday

Five fire engines, including two from Ringwood, were in attendance, along with police and ambulances.

Firefighters using specialist cutting equipment took the roof off both vehicles to reach two casualties with possible spinal injuries.

Long tailbacks formed behind the incident and traffic was also slow on the other carriageway as motorists slowed to look at the crash scene.

A spokeswoman for South Central Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 4.24pm to the A31 just outside of Ringwood to a two vehicle road traffic collision.

"We had two ambulance crews on scene assessing and treating two patients both with possible neck injuries. Both patients were assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to Southampton General Hospital. We do not believe they have life threatening injuries.”

James Chance, 21, a student from Southampton drove past the incident. He said: “I was really shocked when I saw it, I just thought it was football traffic or something and then realised it was much more serious, it doesn’t look good at all I hope the drivers have survived but it looks awful and quite scary.”

James said that he could see at least four fire engines at the scene as well as three ambulances when he drove past and also a sports car with its roof cut off.

“The damage looked severe.”

Emergency services attended the scene with firefighters from Burley, Ringwood and Fordingbridge and Redbridge making the road safe and helping rescue the drivers from their cars.
