CIVIC chiefs have given final approval to replace 120 storm-damaged beach huts on the Hampshire coast despite a £1.1 million price hike.
The concrete structures at Milford on Sea were ripped apart by 80mph winds that battered the area on February 14 2014 and had to be demolished in the interests of public safety
The new huts, coupled with improvements to the seafront, will cost £2.3 million – almost double the original estimate.
As reported in the Daily Echo last month, New Forest District Council’s ruling Cabinet has approved the scheme after more than two years of debate and consultation.
The decision has now been rubber-stamped by the full council.
Work is expected to start in September, with the new huts ready for occupation by April next year.
