POLICE are investigating after a man was found dead near a Hampshire community centre.

A grassy and wooded area near the Calmore Community Centre was taped off yesterday morning after the body was found by a member of the public.

Witnesses said that officers arrived at Calmore Drive at about 9am on Sunday.

As reported by the Daily Echo, resident Joseph Mchanon said: “A grass area was completed taped off after a young lady discovered the body. I just feel sorry for the woman that discovered the body.’’

Another resident, who did not want to be named, said a police helicopter had circled the area.

Totton North town councillor Arthur Davis said: “It’s a real shame for this to happen on this estate in a tragic set of circumstances, I’m thoroughly shocked. This estate is very quiet and this type of incident has never happened before.”

It is thought that the body was that of a 25-year-old local man, according to residents, however police have yet to confirm full details of the victim.

People living in the area posted on Facebook to express their shock and condolences on the incident.

One woman wrote: “This is heart-breaking news” while another woman posted: “Poor family, my heart also goes out to them.”

A Hampshire Constabulary spokesman said: “We are investigating an unsuspicious death outside the community centre on Calmore Drive in Calmore.”
