TRIBUTES have been paid to a former Hampshire councillor who has died aged 88.

John James Dawson, affectionately known as JJ, was a Liberal Democrat who represented Totton on the town, district and county councils.

Cllr David Harrison, a fellow Lib Dem, said Mr Dawson had a "huge influence" on the local community.

He added: "John served as chairman of Totton & Eling Town Council for many years. All around the town you can see tangible evidence of some of the things he achieved.

"He was largely responsible for helping shape Totton during years of significant growth, especially during the 1980S and 1990s.

"As a district councillor, John was in charge of the leisure and culture portfolio, overseeing many projects including health centre provision.

"He was also a respected spokesman for the opposition on social services at the county council.

"Right up until his passing, John showed an interest in community affairs and was a trustee of the Three Score Club in Totton."

Mr Dawson, of Salisbury Road, Totton, was a governor at Oakfield Primary School in Sylvia Crescent, Totton, for 20 years.

Cllr Harrison added: "Totton has lost one of its most influential citizens. He will long be remembered for making a significant positive difference."
