‘Chaos’ worry over jousting tournaments in New Forest

CONTROVERSIAL plans to stage jousting tournaments in the New Forest will cause traffic chaos, a public meeting was told last night.

More than 100 protesters packed a village hall to voice their anger at proposals to hold indoor contests in what they described as a “semi-derelict” building in Brockenhurst.

The jousting is due to take place in a barn at the end of a narrow track leading off Rhinefield Road, starting on Sunday.

Sally Ann Marshall, who lives nearby, said the tournaments would be held seven days a week throughout the summer, with two shows on Thursdays.

She added that the barn could seat 1,000 people and warned that the contests were likely to result in a huge number of cars entering the village.

“There will be chaos on Rhinefield Road – it will be like the New Forest Show every day.”

Brockenhurst councillor Maureen Holding said she was attempting to find a way of preventing the tournaments from going ahead.

She added: “The health and well-being of residents in this village will be compromised by noise, traffic and people. Our whole way of life could change.

“More people have contacted me about this than any other issue in the 11 years I’ve been your district councillor.”

Residents discussed the idea of holding a demonstration outside the venue on Sunday to highlight their strength of feeling.

Cllr Holding said: “If people want a demonstration and feel it’s the only way forward we will do it – but we must stay within the law.”

Villagers said they were thinking of hiring a private company to fine jousting fans – or even clamp their cars – if they parked in residential roads.

John Luke said: “Jousting has the potential to inflict serious disruption in this community and damage the peaceful life enjoyed by a lot of people.

“It’s the wrong activity in the wrong place – and we’re doing our best to get it stopped.”

The tournaments have been organised by New Forest businessman Alan Girling, who says they will give the local economy a much needed boost.

I saw the jousting at Warwick Castle, really good, very entertaining. Probably bring in lots of tourism and money to the local area too. Great day out. They should think about building a trebuchet too.

Brockenhurst councillor Maureen Holding should be put in the stocks for a little more tourist fun

As the AA road signs are already directing the majority of jousting traffic along the A35, I am trying to work out how Brockenhurst will become congested. It is more likely to cause additional delays through Lyndhurst. As for parking in residential roads ... that is a perfectly legal activity as long as entrances are not blocked, and I'm not sure I would personally want to park in Brockenhurst and WALK to Rhinefield!! Added to which, what about all the student cars that clog Brockenhurst for most of the year? The dictionary definition of Holding is clearly NIMBY!

Typical Nimbyism to be expected from the Brockenhurst set.
I would have thought that the potential financial benefits to the local shops and hotels, might have occurred to them, however the urge to keep Brockenhurst in the 1950s seems to overide the needs of the broader community and businesses.

Just a thought if 1000 people come every day, average of 4 per car, this is only 250 cars, if they arrive over an hour long window it equates to 4 cars a minute, not exactly a motorway!!

Brockenhurst is already a tourist destination. The village centre is always crowded at the weekends during summer. I guess the only people complaining are those who live near the venue. It would be interesting to see how the local shopkeepers feel about the potential increase in sales. I can only imaging they would be very happy.

Now, now what's all this racket?

This is a local town for local people, we'll have no jousting here!

It appears that this is old news, and Brockenhurst residents are simply resurrecting what was reported on 29th April 2009 in the Bournemouth Daily Echo : http://www.dailyecho

Presumably the battle was lost 12 months ago, so they are simply trying to make similar noises again this year.

What the residents and this current report forget to mention is that the jousting is being held at the New Forest Activities Centre which, presumably, has appropriate planning because it is also mentioned on the New Forest official tourist websites.

There is free parking and pre-booking is advised. The events are also being staged to support Help for Heroes. With the exception of Thursday (two shows) there is only one show per day at 3.00 pm and there will be NO shows on Saturday's.

So what's the problem? There isn't one and I might even visit myself!
