Car driven along railway tracks at Brockenhurst

Car driven along railway tracks Car driven along railway tracks

An 85-year-old Hampshire woman had a lucky escape today after driving down a high-speed railway line for 80 yards after taking a wrong turn at a level crossing.

The woman had a 20-year-old man in her car as she drove towards Brockenhurst station in the New Forest.

She turned on to the main line between Bournemouth and London Waterloo and drove the silver renault Clio for 80 yards on the tracks before her car came to a halt.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: ''BTP and Hampshire Police officers attended the line near to Brockenhurst rail station after a report that a car had been driven on to the line from the level crossing.

''Paramedics from the South Central Ambulance Service are also on scene. An 85-year-old woman driver and 20-year-old man were in the car at the time have been treated for shock, but no other injuries have been reported.

''Officers are currently on scene whilst the vehicle is removed by recovery vehicles.''

Rail services in the area were disrupted as a result of the incident, with buses brought in to replace trains.

They should put some sort of car traps at level crossings, should a car driver decide for some unknown reason drive on the tracks, instead of going 50, 100 or so more meters a long, the wheels get stuck in some sort of hole or maybe a spike/teeth trap?

No, but I think that, in this case, The Echo was on the right track.

It was an 85 yo woman apparently, and of course the Signaller would have seen it happening and would have prevented any train movements, more serious is how close it came to the conductor rail, the signaller will have got the current off immediately to prevent more problems, there are cattle grids at the crossing but they are not designed to stop motor vehicles.

I think you'll find the Brockenhurst signal box is unmanned. I'm pretty sure the signalling is done from a central point at Woking or Wimbledon or somewhere like that.

Rubbish, the signalbox is manned 24 / 7 and controls the level crossing and the lines in the area including the Lymington branch line, there are plans afoot to move all of the signalling to Basingstoke but that is for the future.

It's not the first time that it has happened and it probably wont be the last.
Given a choice of three entrances to the station - Can't decide? Then just go for the middle one.
On one occasion I recall the elderly car driver actually drove onto the tracks right in front of a Hants Police traffic car.

And I seem to remember that Network Rail operate the signals, not South West trains. So you could be correct about the trains but not about the infrastructure.

There should be an age limit for drivers - ie 70, as some are too dangerous for their own good. Also less cars on the road to free up a bit more space for all of us.

Befire anyone else gets ageist, check the stats & insurance premiums - it's young drivers who have the majority of accidents - that's why their premiums are so high.

Just a few weeks ago there was a story in the Nationals about a 87 year old man who refused to relinquish his licence after failing a road-side sight test. Within days whilst out driving he mounted the pavement and mowed down and killed a 16 year old girl. Just last week in Shirleywhilst crossing at a Pelican crossing an elderly lady who could barely see above the wheel ran through the red light and if it hadn't been for my reactions she would without doubt have hit me and an elderly lady crossing from the opposite side. I am a driver with a full clean licence and accident free since I earned that licence. I say 'earned' because holding a licence is not a RIGHT it is a priveledge and when the time comes, I hope I am not too stubborn or pig headed to notice that my standards are slipping. I believe that once all drivers reach 'a certain age', they should be made to get an eye test, take a hazard perception test and even a reflex/ reaction test.

Shouldn't be on the road full stop. why in the first place would you turn down the railway track and why would you then keep driving, obviously has no brain cells at all. There's loads of younger people paying thousands to take driving lessons and take tests and they fail for stalling the engine a couple of times or revving the engine slightly too high, yet there's these insane pensioners on the road that don't have a clue what they're doing and cause danger to so many people. If that women took her test now, she would fail on the first corner, get her off the road completely but I hope she doesn't end up getting a mobility scooter because she'll be as dangerous on that, those things are a menace. I bet she'll be driving in a week clogging up the roads doing 25mph in a 40 zone annoying everyone and causing people to take risks to get round these total nutters. Absolutely Clueless!!!!!!

Totally agree with you, I drive for a living, and it is very Scary out there at times watching the Old Codgers, I am now 55 but will not drive after 65, but my plans have already been scuppered by the Government, putting age of retirement up to 68, so 10 years down the line it might be up to the age of 71, then we will have big big problems, for instance, a 71 year old, 32 Ton Lorry driver hurtling down the M27, with a Heart condition, ploughing into a line of cars, because the poor b*gger had a Heart attack, he could not have foreseen this when he set off for work, but the government got their way, they will not to have to pay him a pension, they have already said, people are living longer, so they up the retirement age, knowing that a lot will Die before they are 71, I rest my Case.

doreron you are talking total nonsense
When will people like you realise that there are
bad drivers in every age group, and
every sex.
Fact: most accidents are caused by
young male drivers. This reflects in the
insurance costs imposed on them.
Fact: Motorcyclists account for about
2% of road users yet 20% of road
casualties. One in every five young male drivers crash their vehicle within
2 years of passing their test.
It is too easy to generalise. Every driver is an individual no matter what
their age or sex.

Agree with dangers of elderly incompetent drivers and the accident statistics are distorted. Just this sunday in Lyndhurst High Street watched an old codger at the head of the queue as the lights went green went to turn into the high street then inexplicably just stopped, and tried to wave through the cars waiting at the red light. If the guy behind had driven into the back of him it would have been recorded as that person's fault not the senile old fool who caused it. My missus nearly ran into an old git on a roundabout who just stopped on the roundabout and tried to wave all the traffic onto it. It's not chivalry, it's stupid unpredictable dangerous driving.

just making a point," Numpty " the point is, as i stated in my comment, i did not intend to carry on driving after my original age of retirement, which was going to be 65, now it is 66, or maybe 68, so the only thing I can think of for you're comment, is that you are either over 70, or a Bloo*y politician, now generalize that if you can

They do....it's called the 8:41 to Waterloo. Seriously though after age of ....(enter what you think) there should be competency tests. And before all the ageists get on their perches, young drivers should be subject to re-test after offending too

I think an age limit of 70 would be ridiculous. There are lots of good drivers under that age who really need their cars. I would support an age limit of, say, 30 to keep reckless young drivers off our roads.
