Plans to revitalise a New Forest town by giving it an “evening economy” have been thrown out.
Council chiefs have rejected an application to turn a New Milton bank into a 100-seat restaurant – despite complaints about the lack of nightlife in the area.
Campaigners made a last-ditch attempt to persuade the district council's planning and development control committee to approve the scheme.
Councillor Paul Woods added: “We want to give the town back its vibrancy. This is a 100-seat restaurant that will enhance New Milton’s prosperity and provide work for people in the area.”
But other members opposed the application, saying the conversion of Barclays Bank in Station Road would result in the loss of an important facility.
