Tory Lymington councillor Penny Jackman slaps UKIP candidate Mike Beggs

Penny Jackman Penny Jackman

A town hall by-election ended in violence when a 72-year-old candidate was slapped by a Conservative councillor.

UKIP member Mike Beggs was attending the count at Lymington Town Hall when he was struck by Tory Penny Jackman, a member of the district council and the New Forest National Park Authority.

Mr Beggs, of Lymington, said the blow broke the four-tooth bridge in his upper left jaw and had caused him sleepless nights.

Cllr Jackman took exception to Mr Beggs's election leaflets, which mentioned the controversial attempt by the town council to evict Lymington cricket Club from the town centre ground it has occupied for 175 years.

The leaflets cited one meeting at which Cllr Jackman clashed with the cricketers and told a fellow councillor: “Let's shut the buggers down.”

Mr Beggs said he was subjected to a “tirade” of abuse by Cllr Jackman at the count and was suddenly slapped in the face.

He added: “I have had a full apology from Cllr Jackman in which she is most apologetic. She has assured me it will not happen again.”

In a statement Cllr Jackman said: “I have known Mike Beggs for about 14 years since our children attended Hordle Walhampton School together plus various parties, clubs and other out-of-school gatherings over the years. I considered him a friend.

“I deeply regret the incident that occurred at the Lymington and Pennington Town Council by-election count.

“I apologised the following day and Mike was gracious enough to accept my apology. I have no further comment to make.”

The by-election, caused by the resignation of Jean Vernon-Jackson, was won by Conservative candidate Michael White.

Haha - has anyone seen Alan Patridge's spoof political debate A Partridge Over Britain when the tory ends up attacking a student dressed up as Kojak, thereby losing the safest conservative seat in the country? This reminds me of that.

PS if anyone wants to give Nigel Farage a quick slap then I won't tell anyone.

wearing a baseball cap at his age he deserves a good slap. He should count himself lucky, many politicians would happily pay for a good smacking from a woman in a position of power. To be honest I'd give it a try myself if I could afford it. Maybe the Echo readers could have a whip round for me?

Unusual for a Councillor to be attacking anyone else...particularly when they are able to defend themselves.

But hey, come on- haven't we all wanted to land a couple of blows on Royston? Please form an orderly queue...

I expect there will be some angry people in Lymington who read this story and begrudge the fact that someone else had the pleasure of slapping this silly little mans face. What she did was wrong but try to imagine being talked down by someone who is 'always right', believes he knows everything about everything, won't accept alternative views, won't listen, always talks over everybody and probably wonders why he is so unpopular. If I ever meet Councillor Jackman, I'll buy her a drink.

Like or dislike him, the fact is he is a 72 year old man.
If the roles, and ages were reversed there would be a public outcry with demands for his immediate prosecution and resignation, but because he is a man gracious enough to accept her apology the matter will be dropped.
The police should investigate this assault with a view to prosecute. Although I have no doubt the one rule for one and another rule for others will apply.
Her dismissal from holding any public office should be immediate, of course this will not happen, she is after all a Tory.
Resignation is not a word Tories understand.

I agree, but as they were 'friends' beforehand I think it may have been easier for there to be an apology rather than be some fracas in the courts.

I hope she also offered to pay for his dental treatment! but the dignified thing would have been to resign and apologise to everyone including her party for her behaviour, which is clearly totally unacceptable!

Disgusting behaviouir from someone who should know better. She ought to resign and be prevented from holding public office.

I am an 'ordinary working person' you berk.

I am not a member of the Tory party or any political party. Therefore they cannot be my colleagues.

I do not have a Pension. Despite being in the private sector, it would seem, unbelievably, I am not knee deep in £20 notes (Bob Crowe & David Prentice are though) so I can't afford one.

Not sure I can be described as a sheep, I don't tend to suckle from the teet of other people's taxes & the state in general & then froth at the mouth when basic economics unfortunately tends to reduce the milk a little bit, lest the milk run completely dry.

Maybe if you had tried to make something of your time instead of relying on the state to get you through life then it might not be such a struggle.

This horrific capitalist is where he is today through ambition, hard work & self determination. Qualities that I'm sure are probably alien to you. The men in my family have always been self employed.

Speaking of ambition, will be interesting to see if you can beat the 212 votes mark this year (what was that, 6% of the vote?).
Or will it come in less if some of your supporters go all realistic on you & change to Labour, who have made it clear they are too embarrassed to have anything to do with you.

Will you also be mentioning to the people you canvass that one of your idols (if not the only one) is Vladimir Lenin, a psychopathic dictator who sent somewhere between 2 million & 3 million of his own countrymen to their deaths? Probably best if you omit that actually, I'm sure you don't need reminding. It would have probably been kinder to send them to slaughterhouse anyway.

The sheep probably had it easier.

I have Labour worried here in Redbridge, they even publicalley named there Candidate for Redbridge 1 mth early so he can get a longer run up, the only thing for sure in this area is that Torys will lose this ward, and thats going to happen weather if people vote Labour or TUSC the battle for Redbridge is on.
But don't watch this area for a shock result it will not be this ward that will produce it, but the one next door to the shock result last year where a Tory lost his ward to Labour.

And they will get done over by a Labour Council to

I agree, but as they were 'friends' beforehand I think it may have been easier for there to be an apology rather than be some fracas in the courts. Why use this as a stick to beat up the "Tories" it gets so boring, what is your view of that nice gentleman John Prescott, he of the flying fists! he beat up a member of the electorate and got away with it!
Was that the electorate member who attacted John Prescott "who was in his mid sixties" by throwing an egg at point blank range just to saddle up to his Tory masters.
Nearly 40 years his junior and still got a slap from the pensioner.

Prescott wasn't a pensioner in 2001 as he was 63 and the egg thrower was 29 so 'nearly 40 years his junior' is actually 34 years his junior.

You are one of the usual suspects who is normally chomping at the bit to decry ordinary working people and lobby for your Tory colleagues. You have no right to preach to anyone about objectivity.
No Maine Lobster you are wrong there, that I am sure off. Shoong is one of those Capitalist Sheep thats being herded to the slaughterhouse by there shepard.

I second that !!

Only 34 years his junior, thanks for correcting me, that makes all the difference.
A 29-year-old Tory lickspittle attacks a 63 year old, that does seem fair.
I hope you feel really proud of yourself for defending a bully boys actions.

Prescott's a thug who took care of himself like a lot of old boys can. It's only people like you who are frightened of the same thing happening to you that make a fuss. Grow a pair.

I think that you are a little confused; in my opinion John Prescott was right in punching the 29 year old and wiping the smug grin off his face, the look of shock when JP through the left is etched in my memory.
I’m all for people defending themselves but attacking those in their 60s and 70s is not something that thrills me. Maybe it does you.
As for growing a pair, I’m quite happy with what I’ve got, XXL is big enough for me.
