THE boss of a Hampshire luxury yacht maker has been named a Make it in Great Britain Industry Champion by the business minister.

Nigel Stuart, managing director of Discovery Yachts, is one of 30 industry leaders who have been selected to champion the campaign.

It aims to transform the image of UK manufacturing and encourage young people to consider a career in industry.

Marchwood-based Discovery Yachts, which employs up to 100 people, builds some of the world’s most inspired blue-water cruising yachts costing up to £1.7m.

Business minister Mark Prisk said: “The outdated perception of the manufacturing industry does not match the reality of today.

“Make it in Great Britain is all about encouraging support for the sector, dispelling myths and encouraging greater interest in industry by young people and investors.

“Nigel Stuart from Discovery Yachts has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the modern manufacturing environment, making him best placed to spread the good news we have to tell.”

Mr Stuart added: “Discovery Yachts offer a world-class apprenticeship programme in a sophisticated, high tech industry where highly skilled craftsmen have the opportunity to build quality yachts using the latest technologies and composite materials.

“Here at Discovery we are passionate about the quality and design of the yachts that we build as well as the customer care we offer our clients.

Our attention to detail is reflected in the strength of our business throughout the economic downturn.”

Discovery launched a state-of-the-art 50ft catamaran in 2010 and last year unveiled the designs of a new 57ft monohull yacht which will be launched this year.
