Pub crawl in memory of Stacey

Cheers - a stop on the pub crawl. Cheers - a stop on the pub crawl.

IT was a chance to raise a glass – or 12 – in memory of a muchloved friend.

Spirits were high as a bighearted team of pals took on a 10-mile pub crawl, visiting a dozen pubs in and around Blackfield.

It was all part of moves to support Simon Hartley’s bid to climb Mount Kilimanjaro in memory of his daughter Stacey who died of skin cancer earlier this year.

They started off with a tipple at the Croft Tavern in Blackfield, before raising the wrist at pubs including The Boathouse, Lord Nelson, The Seashells, The Fountain Court and The Gleneagles before stumbling in to their final destination, The Langley Tavern.

I can't for the life of me see any connection between the tragic death of a young person from skin cancer, climbing a mountain, and a pub crawl. How do you climb a mountain in someone's memory ? How do you have a pub crawl in someone's memory ? I have never read or heard of anything like this before, and I would be glad if someone would explain.

I mean no disrespect, but it all seems a bit schizoid in concept.

I agree with BillyTheKid. How on earth can a load of people going on a pup crawl and getting drunk in someone's memory actually contribute anything? Did they raise any money for the hospital cancer ward? And how about they raise some money for alcohol related illnesses!

"A load of people"... were in fact Stacey's family and friends who were raising awareness of the terrible disease that took the life of a young woman.

Her father is climbing Kilimanjaro in memory of her and to again raise money and awareness for the British Skin Foundation.

So it's okay for Chris Moyles and his team to climb a mountain for charity but not her father?

Everyone is entitled to do what they want, how they want for charity and this was their/our way of doing it.

It does not say in the editorial above that they were touring the pubs to raise money for any cancer charity.

It does not say that Stacey's father was climbing Kilimanjaro for the same purpose.

It simply states that the "pub crawl" and the mountain climb were "in memory" of Stacey.

Now I probably know the Hartley family from many years ago, and would not say anything bad about them. A brother and sister, Claire and David, come to mind. I probably know you, too ! But we must not disclose ID's here.

Personally, now you have made the facts clear, I think the journalist who wrote the above article deserves to be disciplined for associating a genuine fund-raising event with a "pub crawl", and be made to publish an apology.

I am sorry if anything I said caused you distress, or anyone else connected with this. I've already decided to make a complaint about the article, and insist it is re-written.

Someone is using my BillyTheKid name, having added "_" to Kid ie "Kid_". Please check any further posts to be sure whether it is me or the troll !

Thanks BillyTheKid. You are correct, the article wasn't very well written and didn't fully describe the event. It's so frustrating when articles go to press and they are incorrect with their detail. Especially when you are linked. Your response and apology is much appreciated :)

If you read what the journalist wrote, and the following comments, you will see that your ignorant, incoherent tirade was not necessary. You have attacked me unfairly.

The fact that the story was published in a newspaper and on a website that encourages comments from the public is why it has "sod all to do with" me and anyone else who cares to comment.

I will report your threatening post, and you will probably get a visit from the police.

I've had a think about all this, and it's all clouded with misunderstanding.

1. The Echo published a story about the tragic death of a woman from skin cancer. It then said that someone was climbing a mountain, and that a group of people were doing "a pub crawl in her memory". NOWHERE does it mention any FUNDRAISING.

2. I commented on the story, which you can read above. I also said "I MEAN NO DISRESPECT" by my comments. I said that because I meant it.

3. The reason I know, or knew, a lot of people in the Waterside area is because I lived there for more than thirty years. Now, like most people who post here, I do not wish to disclose my ID. But I could have been a local businessman, a pub landlord, a policeman, a social worker, a teacher, or involved in local community work at Gangwarily or the youth club next to Hardley School, or I could have worked in any of the local shops. Any employment in any of those areas would have brought me into contact with thousands of people over thirty years.

4. Crusha, we probably know each other if you are over thirty ! We'd probably laugh in disbelief about this misunderstanding when you realised I would never have been disrespectful to anyone from Waterside, especially in these circumstances.

5. When Jem told me the FULL FACTS, and informed me about the fundraising, I wrote another comment here explaining WHY I had expressed surprise at the "pub crawl", and then APOLOGISED for any distress I might have caused.

6. The ECHO JOURNALIST is to blame for all this.

7. Lastly, at no point did I share Soloman's Boot's opinions, which I thought were insensitive and sarcastic. And he has not had the courage to come back and explain himself and apologise.

It is many years ago since I lived there, and I did not know about poor Stacey. I am so sorry to hear about this, I offer my deepest sympathy to her family and friends.

And to all of you raising money for the charity, may I say WELL DONE ! Going round knocking on doors would have been no use as people don't answer these days, so visting the pubs is a great idea.

Well, I've stated my case, and I hope anyone connected with the the Hartleys and/or the fundraising will accept it.

I am withdrawing my complaint about Crusha's post as, although his attitude was hostile and threatening, his heart is in the right place.

Crusha, please accept my personal apology.
