A 90-YEAR-OLD woman became stranded in her car in a ditch overnight before being rescued by firefighters in Hampshire.

The woman was discovered submerged in mud and water by a passing dog walker near Oakley Lane, Mottisfont, at around 11am on Sunday.

She had spent the night in her car before trying to release her car in the morning and becoming immersed in mud herself.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service originally described the woman as being in her 70s but later clarified she is 90 and from the Mottisfont area.

After being rescued by emergency crews she was taken to Southampton General Hospital suffering from hypothermia.

Crew manager Pete McClemont from Romsey fire station said: “The woman was incredibly lucky she was found and she was able to receive medical treatment before her condition deteriorated.

“Locating and treating a casualty in situation like this also demands a large emergency service response.”

Mr McClemont added: “If you are going out in the country, always make sure you let someone know where you are going and an idea of how long you intend to be out.”
