IT’S an idea that has already won praise from high street shopping guru Mary Portas.

When two brothers decided to launch a “teenage market” to showcase the work and creative ideas of young people, it was instantly a hit and quickly rolled out across the country.

Now Romsey is preparing to host its first event – and it’s been hailed a sellout success before it has even taken place.

Romsey Town Council, which is hosting the market that takes place on November 23, says it has been inundated with applications from people wanting to take part.

Demand is so high that they have even extended the number of pitches available on the day so that now 25 applicants can take part.

There are also a handful of places for singers and bands to perform on the day, with a chance to show off your musical talents to a live audience for free.

Mark Edgerley, Romsey’s town centre manager, said: “We have a very strong contingent from The Romsey School, some of whom are raising funds for ‘Romsey2Kenya’ to assist the children of Nakura, Kenya to learn and flourish.

“Many of the other young traders are also raising money for charity.”

Goods on sale at the event in Crosfield Hall will include various crafts and gifts themed around Christmas, photographic images, jewellery, tie-dye items, baby clothes, art, Christmas decorations, cakes and cookies.

The Teenage Market was set up by teen brothers Joe and Tom Barratt in Stockport and described by retail guru Mary Portas as “innovative and inspiring”.
