A DIGITAL petition has been launched by a Hampshire woman campaigning for a deadly road to be made safer.

Fordinbridge resident Emily Browne is calling for safety measures on the A338 following the deaths of 13 people on the 13.7-mile stretch between Ringwood and Nunton since 2006.

Now she has started a petition on Change.org and has already collected 200 signatures from people wanting Wiltshire and Hampshire County Council’s to put safety first on this notorious stretch.

Between 2007 and 2011 there were 28 fatal or serious accidents on the same stretch.

Last month 30-year-old driver William Cooper, below, from Ibsley, became the latest victim when he died after his van came of the road and hit a treet.

Daily Echo:

Ms Browne said: “The A338 between Salisbury and Ringwood is a highly dangerous stretch of road.

“Single carriageway alignment and multiple sharp bends often result in risky overtaking, which has been the cause of numerous head-on collisions over the years.

“Recently an accident hotspot near Fordingbridge tragically claimed the life of Ibsley resident William Cooper.

“The very same location, a winding stretch of road near the town of Fordingbridge, has claimed the lives of five more people over the past nine years.

“Head further down the A338 towards Salisbury and you face similar tragic stories.

Daily Echo:

“I’ve heard people say it’s not the fault of the road but it’s the way people drive.

“If you are one of these individuals, have you also considered that people who drive within the law are also involved in traffic accidents?

“Sign this petition and let Hampshire and Wiltshire Councils know that we cannot wait any longer.

“Measures must be taken to improve the A338 before more people lose their lives.”

Ms Browne added: “Earlier this month David Cameron announced a £15billion ‘road revolution’ “Plans include building a 1.8-mile tunnel under Stonehenge.

“So there we have it: no project is too ambitious for Wiltshire Council.

“Take a minute to read the comments. People who have lost family, friends and relatives are asking for your help.”
