POLICE have warned people in Romsey to be aware of rogue traders operating in the town.

On Friday a man knocked on a resident’s door at noon and spoke to him, saying he was offering gardening services. The resident, believing him to be a genuine gardener, gave him £40 to buy weed killer but he left without returning.

The man was described as white, aged 48 to 50, 5ft 7ins tall and of stocky build, with brown short hair.

He wore a navy blue T-shirt and trousers.

Hampshire Constabulary have warned residents to be aware of rogue traders and not to keep large sums of money in the house or purses and wallets near the door.

Anyone with concerns should call the police on 101.

PCSO Gemma Clark said: “If someone does come to your door offering services please get as much detail as possible, a description of the person or persons and vehicle including registration if possible.

“Please ensure you only do business with trustworthy tradesmen and women through the buy with confidence scheme, this is where you can find reputable tradesmen and women, all of which have been checked for trustworthiness by trading standards, and only once they have passed strict tests are they accepted onto the scheme.”
