AN INQUEST into the death of a popular Romsey rugby player who died in a traffic collision last month has been opened and adjourned until June.

Macaulay Campbell, known as Mac, died after his black VW Lupo collided with another car on the A3057 near Romsey Golf Club on February 20.

Candlelit vigils have been held by those who knew him, whilst laid flower bouquets, mementos, rugby balls and heartfelt messages for the Since his death, a campaign has been launched to remember the 20-year-old former Mountbatten School pupil from Rownhams with a music festival.

Named MacFest, the idea has been given the support of a number of high-profile celebrities, including Southampton music legend Craig David.

A fundraising night will be held at Switch nightclub on Above Bar Street on April 2, with all proceeds going towards the cost of the festival.

A half-time tribute at St Mary’s Stadium was also carried out a few weeks ago when Southampton took on Chelsea.

The hearing into the circumstances of his death will be held on Monday June 10 at Winchester Coroner’s Court, but this date has yet to be confirmed.
