A MAJOR road in Romsey is to be closed from Wednesday night for urgent bridge works.

Greatbridge Road will be closed from 10pm as engineers install crash decking to the underside of the bridge, in support of further work to replace bridge timbers.

The bridge itself is close to the roundabout where Greatbridge Road meets Duttons Road.

The road will be closed 20 metres either side of the bridge, though engineers say that emergency service vehicles will be able to get through at all times.

At certain times of the closure, one lane will be open to traffic depending on the speed of the project.

It will close between 10pm and 5am from Wednesday to Thursday, and from the same times on Thursday night into Friday.

Diversions are listed via the A3090 and Cupernham Lane via the M3 and A27.
