THE life and legacy of the great nurse Florence Nightingale will be celebrated at the school that was once her family home.
More than 100 pupils at Hampshire Collegiate School, under the direction of head of music George Tinsley, have created The Lady with the Lamp to mark the centenary of Florence’s death.
Florence Nightingale became known as the “Lady with the Lamp” to the soldiers she nursed in the Crimean War. During her childhood at Embley Park she developed a love of science, mathematics and nature.
The audience will be taken on a dream-like journey through the rooms, corridors, hallways, chapel and grounds of Embley Park. On the way they will encounter sounds and images relating to Florence’s life.
As well as music and film, the pupils have made butterflies out of Victorian medicine labels and a graveyard of ideas with markers highlighting notions which Florence’s work helped to end – these include that women should stay at home, women should not be allowed to vote and that fresh air should be kept out of hospitals.
Pupils in period costume will also appear and fleeting glimpses of Florence and her lamp are promised.
