Every 'no show' appointment costs trust £100

NEARLY 15,000 people failed to show up to their hospital appointments across our major hospitals in just three months, new figures reveal.

The shocking numbers come as The Daily Echo continues its Turn Up or Tell ’Em campaign urging outpatients to keep their hospital appointments or cancel them in advance if they can’t turn up.

Just the latest batch of missed appointments, known as “Do Not Attends” (DNA), costs YOUR local NHS a staggering £1.5m.

That is based on Government figures that estimates each missed hospital appointment costs an average of £100 in wasted resources, including specialist equipment being booked, translators arranged and time spent by doctors, nurses and administrative staff waiting for patients who don’t turn up.

The latest Department of Health figures reveal that there were 10,972 DNAs recorded by Southampton University Hospitals NHS Trust, responsible for running Southampton General and Princess Anne Hospitals between January and March.

Meanwhile Winchester and Eastleigh Healthcare NHS Trust, responsible for running Winchester’s Royal Hampshire County Hospital and Andover War Memorial Hospital, had 3,855 DNAs.

Both hospital trusts, and the Secretary of State for Health Andrew Lansley, have backed our Turn Up or Tell ’Em campaign.

Since its launch, Winchester’s Royal Hampshire County Hospital has told people who miss their appointments without letting the hospital know they will not automatically be offered another one.

And bosses at Southampton General and Princess Anne Hospitals have launched a new online cancellation form.

A trust spokesman said: “Several hospital departments now send text messages to patients to remind them about their appointments. If patients cannot attend their appointment, we would urge them to let us know as soon as possible, either by telephone or by using our new online cancellation form.”

Patients for Southampton’s hospitals should call the number on their appointment letter or visit suht.nhs.uk/cancel.

Health bosses in Winchester say people who cannot attend their appointments should call the number on their appointment card in the first instance. However if they have lost it they should call the main switchboard on 01962 863535.

"translators arranged".
.
Fail to turn up at an appointment in Spain and you still pay for your translator service. Turn up and you pay.
.
Perhaps we could adopt the same here and start saving money - or is that too simple?

They probably turned up but were unable to find a parking space.
SGH is an excellent hospital but the parking facilities are appalling I have seen queues at 10 am long befor visiting times.
Sort out the parking and half your no shows would attend their appointments

... as opposed to those who do turn up and sit in the waiting room for 10 hours, and then get asked to come back in two weeks as their records have been lost.

Why is it if people dont turn up, those who do turn up still end up waiting for hours?
Why dont the hospital's and doctor's offices call the patients the day before to check they are coming and to remind them. Old people may forget they have an appointment.
Thats what my hair salon does for me.

Why has my appointment been changed 4 times in the last few months? Is it a wonder appointments are missed ? SGH creates confusion by rescheduling appointments with no reason. This never happened in Brighton and Hove, appointments were made at the last appointment and never changed.

If the U9 was reinstated, people would have more public transport to get to the hospital.

It should be easy to SMS patients with a gentle reminder. InHealth was incapable of this, they kept leaving unintelligible messages and that was for people attending audiology appointments!!!

I agree that SGH is a great hospital but as Geoff51 says above, the parking is horrendous.
However this surely can't be blamed for all the no-shows.
As a GP once said to me, a great number of his appointments were no more than hypochondriacs with finger-ache.
If a person really is sick, they surely they would grab a hospital appointment when it was offered, especially if the NHS is as bad as folk make it out to be.

If the U9... - are you serious. SGH is well served by public transport.
