DAVE Webb’s squad will be tested to the limit when Supermarine host Abingdon United this evening, but the manager has backed his makeshift side to pick up where they left off last time they faced the Oxfordshire club.
When the two teams met in January the game was called off due to heavy fog with Marine 2-0 up at the break, after Ashley Edenborough and Chris Taylor had given the home side a commanding lead.
The South Marston club are without captain Dave Bampton who has work commitments and the suspended Danny Allen, as well as the injured Sam Morris and Jordan Roberts for the game at the Webb’s Wood Stadium.
All four are regularly involved in the first team, but Webb has backed whichever side he selects to secure a vital win in the quest for promotion back to the Southern Premier.
“All four of those players are always pushing for a place, but I have always said we have a good squad of players at the club to deal with things like this,” he said.
“We were always going to be tested over the run-in until the end of April, we have to play every Tuesday and every Saturday until the end of the season, so we knew how difficult it was going to be.
“We need to sustain momentum in these difficult games, and we have to keep going and tick off those games.
“People will look at games like this and think it is one Supermarine really should be winning, but it will be a difficult game I’m sure, and I’m not taking Abingdon lightly one little bit.”
Elsewhere this evening Highworth are in Floodlit Cup action against Cheltenham Saracens, in a game manager John Fisher admitted he and his club could probably do without.
“I’m not a lover of this competition, not one bit,” he said.
“This costs money to do it, and it shouldn’t, it costs money to put the floodlights on and then once you pay the referee you have spent more than you have taken through the gate.
“What it might do though is give us a chance to get a game in and get a win, and get us back on track.”
Meanwhile in the Southern League Premier Division last night, Chippenham went down 2-1 at Bashley.
