THAMES Water has launched a campaign to warn people about the problems caused by washing grease and wet wipes down drains.
The company has highlighted the damage that can be caused to homes and businesses from blocked drains.
Each month the company spends more than £1m clearing almost 7,000 blockages, with half caused by flushed fat and wet wipes.
Rob Smith, Thames Water’s chief sewer flusher, said: “Sewers are designed to take loo roll, dirty water and human waste and nothing else.
“Sadly we are seeing more and more fat and wet wipes, which should never be flushed even if the packaging says ‘flushable’, ending up in our sewers.
“That’s a big headache for us, but it can also lead to sewage backing up into our customers’ homes and gardens, which is utterly hideous.
“Our plea is for everyone to start heeding the sewermen’s war cry: “Bin it – don’t block it.”
The call comes as part of a campaign called Be The Start which encourages companies to inspire people to live a sustainable lifestyle.
