Chris Mordue, the best bowler ever to come out of the Bradford area, won three competitions as he enjoyed a terrific week.

The Pudsey player started off by winning the Tadcaster title, defeating Allan Croft (Garforth Rec) 21-14 in the final to take the £500 first prize. On his way to the decider, Mordue defeated Tony Green (Whitkirk) 21-6 and Jon Wilcox (Crossgates) 21-14.

Quarter-finals: Jon Wilcox (Crossgates) 21, Paul Mottram (Alverthorpe) 18; Chris Mordue (Pudsey) 21, Tony Green (Whitkirk) 6; Neil Simpson (Ladyhill) 18, Rob Lloyd (Glasshoughton) 21; Nathan Conlon (Swillington) 20, Allan Croft (Garforth Rec) 21. Semi-finals: Wilcox 14, Mordue 21; Lloyd 17, Croft 21. Final: Mordue 21, Croft 14.

Mordue then took the Wednesday Merit title for the fifth time, defeating Ian Matthews (Eccleshill) 21-7 at Peel Park in the final.

Mordue, who first lifted the trophy in 1994, bowled well throughout but had his toughest game in the quarter-finals against recent Shipley Classic winner Stuart King (Asa Briggs) as he edged home 21-19.

King will feel this one slipped out of the bag, as he looked a winner throughout, but Mordue played some key bowls at key times.

Runner-up Matthews has certainly improved with age and will surely be in the winner’s enclosure before long.

Quarter-finals: Keith Hatzer (Ladyhill) 21, Mick Angus (Eccleshill) 9; Stuart King (Asa Briggs) 19, Chris Mordue (Pudsey) 21; Kevin Wood (Brighouse Sports) 16, Stewart Watson (Pudsey) 21; Nicky Bastow (Eccleshill) 14, Ian Matthews (Eccleshill) 21. Semi-finals: Hatzer 7, Mordue 21; Watson 10, Matthews 21. Final: Mordue 21, Matthews 7.

Mordue capped a memorable week by securing the Ben Ramsden Merit title, sponsored by Naylor Wintersgill (Chartered Accountants), at Spen Victoria.

He defeated Philip Walker (Harold Park) 21-9 in the final to finally claim a prize which has always previously eluded him.

Walker was never allowed to get going in the final after some terrific performances earlier in the day.

Quarter-finals: Paul Hillam (Eccleshill) 21, Scott Sansom (Asa Briggs) 12; Kim Ramsden (Ladyhill) 10, Chris Mordue (Pudsey) 21; Stuart King (Asa Briggs) 21, Tony Riley (Brighouse Sports) 17; Philip Walker (Harold Park) 21, Paul Gill (Clayton) 11. Semi-finals: Hillam 15, Mordue 21; King 19, Walker 21. Final: Mordue 21, Walker 9.
