FIREFIGHTERS have warned about the importance of fitting smoke alarms after being called to a house in Southampton last night.
A man and woman raised the alarm after spotting smoke pouring from their kitchen floor in Mowbray Road, Sholing, at 8.37pm.
Crews from Hightown fire station arrived to put out the smouldering patch and were forced to remove part of the flooring to stop it spreading.
They put the incident down to a faulty cooker and fitted smoke alarms before they left.
Watch manager Simon Molyneux said: “They didn't have smoke detectors fitted to the property.
“They were very lucky it wasn't worse and that it wasn't later at night when they may not have spotted it.
“We remind members of the public to ensure they install smoke alarms.”
