THOUSANDS of tickets will go on sale for a giant festival on Southampton Common after council chiefs gave the event the green light.

Common People will take place over two days this summer – with capacity for 30,000 revellers.

Organised by Rob da Bank and the team behind Bestival and Camp Bestival, the event is promising to bring some of the biggest acts to the city.

Council chiefs gave the event the green light to finalise plans after Hampshire police raised no objections.

Organisers are not revealing the line-up but say acts will include legendary stalwarts of the festival scene and guaranteed crowdpleasers as well as aspiring artists.

The two-day metropolitan festival will be bringing the spirit of Bestival right to the heart of the city with a line-up featuring both live music and DJs.

Further details will be announced soon but tickets for the event, on May 23 and 24, will cost around £25.

Former Radio 1 DJ and Common People curator Rob da Bank says he wants the festival to “make Southampton proud”.

It is designed to bring a family-oriented mixture of both the Isle of Wight’s Bestival and Dorset’s Camp Bestival into the city centre.

Rob said: “This isn’t a camping show, it’s not a tents, wellies and car packed to the rafters experience, it’s a metropolitan two-day show, easy to access and open to all ages, compact but packed with experiences and priced very, very reasonably.

“We can’t wait to unveil our headliners and star cast for our first Common People show in May. Watch this space.”

The event will see the open “flats” area of the Common fenced off but there will not be overnight camping on site.

Festival-goers will be encouraged to use public transport to keep congestion to a minimum and there are no plans for any road closures.
