POLICE are investigating a mystery death in Southampton yesterday after a body was found .

Officers were called to Golden Grove, St Mary's, at around 1.50pm following the discovery of a man's body.

The area remains cordoned off and police are treating the death as “unexplained”.

A tent has been erected outside on a pavement as officers work at the scene.

Police tape has been set up around a section of Golden Grove in St Mary's between a block of flats and yards from a playground.

Officers from Hampshire police have cordoned off the area around Josian Walk while forensics officers comb the area for clues.

The discovery of the body has left a community in shock with one resident, who doesn't want to be named, describing it as "shocking".

Another said: "I don't know lots. I asked if the he was old or young, if he had got murdered, they won't tell me anything."

Less than a month ago, two people were charged following a stabbing at an address in Golden Grove, which left a 34-year-old in hospital.

A woman, who the Daily Echo is not naming, said she saw a man who she believed was in his 30s lying on the ground as she was returning from town.

He was found on the ground outside her house in Golden Grove. She said: “I have no idea who he was it is quite shocking.

“It’s quite shocking for all of us because it has happened next to our house. We have been living her for six years.

"There’s lots and lots of new people here and its quite shocking. It’s worrying, I don’t know what’s going to happen next."

 Another woman, Kathy Parker, said: “It’s getting awful here. It’s frightening. I take the dogs round here first thing in the morning for walks and I am looking over my shoulder. It’s not safe like it used to be.”
