A HAMPSHIRE man will defy the doctors who said he would never walk by trekking five miles for charity.

Kevin Coombes was in a road accident 25 years ago while cycling home from work at Fawley Refinery.

He suffered multiple injuries to his legs, hips, pelvis and internally as well as severe head injuries.

Put into an induced coma for six weeks, his family didn't know if he would survive and when he eventually came to, Kevin couldn't feel his legs.

Doctors said he would never walk again, but after more than a year in rehabilitation and physio, Kevin started to take his first steps with the help of a walker.

Now, aged 58 and living in New Milton, Kevin wants to show people that anything is possible.

He said: “It was very difficult, I have been left with brain damage and have to walk with crutches but I was able to do it again and I think this is an important this to show everyone.”

He will be doing a Saints to Saints trip on April 4 to raise money for the Children's Society, walking the five miles between the Saints Pub and St Mary's Stadium.

The inspiration behind Kevin's fundraising came when his stepdaughter, Samantha, a university student, decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro but has to raise a certain amount for the children's charity before the trip.

“I'm supporting Samantha but this is also for me to prove that I can do something spectacular.”
