FIREFIGHTERS, police and paramedics staged a dramatic rescue last night after a 90-year-old became stuck in mud in Southampton.

The pensioner became trapped in the River Itchen near Woolston at around 6pm.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue sent five vehicles from Redbridge, Hightown and Fareham stations, accessing the river via Hazel Road, Woolston.

An ambulance hazardous area response team was also at the scene along with police, Hamble Lifeboat and Hillhead Coastguard.

Specialist mud and water rescue equipment was used to dig the man out and he was taken to Southampton General Hospital for checks but was not injured.

A Hampshire Police spokesman confirmed the man had been stuck up to his knees in tidal mud around 100m away from the shore.

The spokesman said the pensioner had been attaching fishing sinkers to buoys.
