ARSONISTS struck five times in one night in a spate of bin fires across Southampton in the early hours of this morning.

Firefighters from St Mary’s station were called to a series of rubbish blazes within two hours of each other in the city.

Police have been alerted to at least one of them but it is not yet known whether they are all linked.

Crews were called to Redbridge Towers in Cuckmere Lane shortly after midnight when residents spotted flames coming from a communal bin store.

They used a hose reel to put out the flames which badly damaged the bin store and nearly 20 metres of fencing separating the flats from the M271 motorway.

It also spread to a Citroen C1 parked nearby, melting its light cluster.

Police were called to the scene but it is not yet known how the blaze started.

An hour later at 1.09am they went to Smiths Quay boat yard in Hazel Road in Woolston where three skips were set on fire.

They used foam hose reels to put out the flames.

Within an hour they found a wheelie bin alight in Blackberry Terrace in St Mary’s at 1.38am and another shortly after in nearby Mount Pleasant Road at 2.18am which were both put out with hose reels.

Meanwhile they tackled a fifth bin fire in Above Bar Street in the city centre at 2.01am and used two buckets of water to put it out.
