IT was a fitting tribute to a young dad who suddenly died.

Scores of mourners dressed in red and white turned out to say a tearful final goodbye and celebrate the life of Saints fan Josh Payne.

His coffin, covered in Southampton Football Club colours, was slowly taken into Wessex Vale Crematorium in West End as loved ones quietly watched on.

As previously reported the 20-year-old from Thornhill went into hospital on May 14 but died unexpectedly two days later.

It is understood doctors are still trying to understand how he died.

Daily Echo:

A collection started by family friends Shona, 19, and her mum Amanda Hunter had raised more than £2,500 to ensure family and friends could give Josh, also known as Barky, a proper send-off.

The chapel at the crematorium had standing room only last night as people packed in to pay their respects to Josh, a former Itchen College student who went toThornhill Primary and Woodlands schools, Matthew Smith, who led the service, read a tribute from Josh’s mum Sandy Payne.

Daily Echo:

She recalled happy memories of her son, his love of being with his family and his supportive nature and good sense of humour.

They mourners were also shown a photo montage on a screen showing his life.

The service closed as loved ones sang When the Saints Go Marching In at the top of their voices.

They then headed to a wake at the Royal British Legion Club in Windover Close, Bitterne ,where more than 100 red and white balloons were released in his memory.

A trust fund has been set up to support Josh’s 11-month-old son Riley.
