THE life of a Winchester dad who fought for children’s rights is to be celebrated tomorrow.

A funeral will be held for Hadyn Burton, who was found hanging in his cell at Winchester Prison on July 15, at the South Downs Natural Burial Site, in East Meon, at 12pm.

Since the news of his death emerged tributes have been paid on social media and even on temporary boards on one of the High Street’s empty shops.

A candle-lit vigil was held last Friday outside the former sports shop for the 42-year-old who was often seen, donning a Superman onesie and a loud-hailer, calling for changes to the law for children’s rights.

An inquest was opened by the senior coroner for central Hampshire, Grahame Short, for Mr Burton, formerly of Wolfe Close in Stanmore, whose death was confirmed three days after he was found and rushed to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital.

As previously reported, an investigation has been launched into his death as well as that of another man, Daryl Hargrave, 22, of Gosport, who was found just a few days later.

Like Mr Burton, Mr Hargrave was on the remand wing of the prison, where he was being detained on charges for grevious bodily harm. Mr Burton was meanwhile facing allegations of assault.

Mr Burton was due to be sentenced at Winchester Crown Court for possession of an offensive weapon, criminal damage to a police cell, and breach of a criminal behaviour order by being anti-social.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Justice confirmed both deaths are being looked into by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, but refused to comment further.

Director of the Criminal Justice Alliance, Ben Summerskill said: “It’s shocking that this should be happening at all in prisons, let alone on a regular basis.”
