ONE'S the tireless man of steel who's gone above and beyond the call of duty to help others - and the other one's Superman.

Saints legend Francis Benali is up against the actor who played the costumed superhero in the battle to become the UK's best celebrity charity fundraiser.

Former skipper Benali, Man of Steel actor Henry Cavill and video blogger Tom Cassell are the nominees in the celebrity fundraiser category of this year's Just Giving Awards.

The winners of the awards, which recognise the country's best fundraising efforts of the last year, will be announced at a glitzy ceremony next month and people in Hampshire can do their bit to ensure Benali wins the trophy by voting in the next week.

Benali, who amassed 389 appearances for Saints, completed an epic, 1,000-mile run around all 20 Premier League grounds to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Despite the many aches and pains and the mental toll of the challenge he completed it in style, running in to a packed St Mary's Stadium before Saints' 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle last September.

The final figure raised by Benali's Big Run was £265,000, which will all go towards the work done by Cancer Research UK.

In December he became the first person to be awarded the Barclays Spirit of the Game award for his efforts - and now he could be about to claim another award.

Speaking to the Daily Echo about his nomination he said: "I'm extremely honoured and proud, the attention was not why I did the challenge but it's lovely to be recognised for the money we raised for the charity and this is recognition of everybody who has supported me, raised money and helped me around the world.

"The run was almost life-changing, I experienced an awful lot in football but this was something that tested me to the limit physically and mentally, it was extreme to say the least.

"I couldn't have done it without the support of an awful lot of people and I'm very grateful for that."

Cavill, who played the superhero in 2011's Man of Steel and is set to reprise the role in the crossover Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, was nominated after taking part in the Gibraltar Rock Run last year.

Running alongside his brother Lieutenant Colonel Henry Cavill he raised £140,000 for the Royal Marines Charitable Trust.

The third and final name on the shortlist is computer game blogger Tom Cassell, otherwise known as Syndicate, who has raised £163,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association through a 24-hour live concert broadcast on video website YouTube.

The deadline for voting is August 30, before the winners are announced at a ceremony in London on September 23.
